India is the world's largest democracy, and the history of its evolution is both rich and, in many ways, inspiring. In this second volume of the popular book India's Struggle for Independence, the issues and successes of India over the last five decades are analyzed. The historical context of pre-independence India, the colonial legacy, and the century-long struggle for independence are examined, providing insights into the history of post-independence India.
The book discusses the process of drafting the Constitution, the core aspects of the political, economic, and foreign policies that were envisioned by Jawaharlal Nehru. It delves into issues like the political conflicts between the central and state governments, the Punjab problem, the dark shadows of communalism, caste-based politics, and the controversial subject of untouchability, offering a detailed investigation into the efforts to unify the nation.
There is a thorough discussion of India's economic reforms starting in 1991, land reforms, and the Green Revolution. Additionally, it includes an objective evaluation of political figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Jayaprakash Narayan, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Overall, the book provides a comprehensive and clear picture of a leading nation's journey, offering a lucid portrayal of contemporary India.
