Panthajan: A Literary and Professional Journey

Moses wandered through the desert in search of the "Promised Land," and after forty years of travel, his chief disciple Joshua led the people to settle in this sacred land, known as Jerusalem. Jerusalem, the birthplace of the three major world religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—has long been a city of both religious significance and deep historical value. It is a city where ancient homes, religious sites, tombs, and more tell tales of centuries of culture, and it continues to be a powerful symbol of faith and conflict. Jerusalem’s mix of history and legend makes it a truly remarkable city, often standing at the crossroads of history and spirituality.

Panthajan was born in Kolkata on Dol Purnima in 1965. Though he grew up in Jamshedpur, his roots are firmly planted in Bengali culture. He attended Loyola and DBMS English School and, before even starting formal schooling, was taught Bengali by his mother. A lifelong habit of writing in Bengali, especially while traveling, led him to keep detailed diaries in his mother tongue from a young age. His contributions to Bengali literature include several works published in Sandesh, the famous magazine edited by Satyajit Ray, Leela Majumdar, and Nalini Das. He has also written numerous essays and poems for smaller literary magazines.

Panthajan pursued a career in medicine, earning his degrees in surgery from AFMC, Pune. After serving for twenty-three years in the Indian Army Medical Corps, he retired and returned to Jamshedpur to practice medicine. Despite his professional commitments, his passion for travel has been a constant, allowing him to write about the diverse experiences he has encountered both in India and abroad.

His first book, Kabuler Pothe Pothe, and second book, Suru Nadir Upakhyan, are reflective of his interests in travel, history, and human connections. Through these works, he has continued to blend his professional experiences with his literary endeavors.
