মড়িক্ষণই বা কী? এই ক্ষণে কেউ মারা গেলে, কেন তার সৎকার করে না, হেমতপুরের লোকেরা? বরং তাকে রেখে আসে, বাড়ির খোলা ছাদে বা নিভৃত কোণ কোণে।কেন? কার জন্য? কে আসে সেই মৃৎদেহ ভক্ষণের জন্য... 

কেন পশ্চিমের জঙ্গলের, দিকে সচরাচর যায় না এলাকার লোকেরা? ওরা বিশ্বাস করে, ওখানে অমুয়ারা থাকে। যাদের মুখ দেখা মানেই সর্বনাশ হওয়া। কারা এই অমুয়া? আর ওখানে ওরা কী করছে?

মৃতপ্রায় নিহারিনীদেবীর শেষ সময়ে কলকাতা থেকে হেমতপুরে এসে উপস্থিত হয়, তার ভাইপো সুমেশ সান্যাল। সঙ্গে স্ত্রী বীথি আর ছেলে টুপাই। এদের এখানে আসার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই বদলে যায় হেমতপুরের লোকেদের ভাগ্য। নেমে আসে চরম বিপদ। লোভের বশবর্তী হয়ে ভুল করে এমন কাকে মুক্ত করে সুমেশ আর বীথি? আর তার জন্য তাদেরই  বা কী মাসুল দিতে হয়?

In the Sundarbans, when a tiger makes a big kill, it cannot devour the prey all at once. The half-eaten carcass is left behind to be consumed later. This half-eaten dead body of the tiger’s prey is called a mori.

But how did this theory of the Sundarbans steal away the sleep of the people of Hematpur, a small town in North Dinajpur?

What is Morikkhon? If someone dies at that very moment, why don’t the people of Hematpur perform the last rites? Instead, why do they leave the corpse on the open rooftop or in some secluded corner of the house? For whom? Who comes to feast on that body?

Why do the townspeople rarely venture into the western forests? They believe that the Amuas dwell there—and to see their faces is to invite certain doom. Who are these Amuas? And what are they doing in that place?

At the final moments of the dying Niharini Devi, her nephew Sumes Sanyal arrives in Hematpur from Kolkata, along with his wife Beethi and their son Tupai. From the moment they arrive, the fate of the people of Hematpur changes. Extreme peril descends upon them. Driven by greed, whom do Sumes and Beethi mistakenly set free? And what price must they themselves pay for it?

During Niharini Devi’s funeral, what exactly happened that changed the very life of Hematpur’s people?
