This book was written by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru during his imprisonment at the Ahmednagar Fort between 1942 and 1945, prior to India’s independence.
In it, Nehru provides a scientific analysis of India’s rich and diverse culture, religion, and history, tracing developments from the Indus Valley Civilization to Indian independence.

He attempted to harmonize the various perspectives on Indian history and presented himself as a model of such harmony.
About this book, Nehru himself wrote that history is the story of human struggle—against wild animals and forests, and against some of his own kind who tried to suppress and exploit him for their own benefit.
