"Lewis Brown’s grandfather worked in the tea gardens of Assam. Lewis never saw his grandfather, as he passed away before Lewis was born. His grandmother, however, never permanently lived in Assam; she resided in their home in London. She visited her husband twice during her lifetime but couldn’t stay for long. It wasn’t that she didn’t love her husband—she did. But the jungles of Assam, the mosquitoes, malaria, and the isolated lifestyle didn’t appeal to her. She returned to her homeland.
The grandfather used to visit home for a few days once every year or two. It was during those visits that the husband and wife reunited, and the process of having children occurred. Lewis had heard the story of his grandmother’s two visits to Assam numerous times. Towards the end of those stories, she could never continue—her voice would choke, and she would often wipe her tears while speaking about her husband. Before her death, she had a deep wish to place a white flower on her husband’s grave as a token of peace for his soul. But that wish remained unfulfilled.
