Through sonnets, epics, and the evolving currents of postmodern thought, he has touched upon the many dimensions of life in his exploration of poetic diversity. He has carried Bengali poetry beyond the geographical boundaries of its homeland. Celebrated across various countries through translations, this poet has been honored with the Homer Prize by Europe. Jyotirmoy Dutta, a poet and critic from West Bengal, described him as “a new indigenous force of Bengal.” According to Greek poet Maria Mistrioti, his poetry is “philosophically inclined and rich with countless symbols.” He believes that prose, like poetry, can also create new forms of beauty. Guided by this vision, he has written short stories, novels, plays, essays, and travelogues. Including Selected Essays, he has previously published seven collections of essays. In this current volume, he presents a comprehensive analysis of Bangladeshi poetry, discussing its themes, language, and literary traditions. In the preface, he states: “I began with an essay on medieval Bengali poetry, attempting to understand the stages of rhythm, language, and technique from which we have moved forward. Naturally, having crossed that period, figures like Michael Madhusudan Dutt and Rabindranath Tagore brought significant changes in poetic sensibility, language, meter, structure, and voice. Later, Kazi Nazrul Islam sounded the bugle of rebellion and made a profound contribution by forging a distinct tone and tenor in the making of modern poetry. Both Jibanananda Das and Buddhadeva Bose were born within the geographic boundaries of what is now Bangladesh. As such, their vast poetic corpus has enriched Bangladeshi poetry in numerous ways—offering guidance and inspiration to later generations of poets.” This book will provide intellectual nourishment for poets, poetry lovers, students, professors, and creative readers of the new era.
