Meritocracy is a social and political system in which an individual's success, position, and status depend on their intelligence, skills, and capabilities. In such a system, factors like social class, family heritage, or inherited/acquired wealth play no role. Because it is based on fairness and competence, the idea is increasingly gaining acceptance. The philosophical foundation of this concept is "faith in individual capability," its moral basis is "impartial competition" and "equality of opportunity," and its political foundation is "equal rights for all." In a meritocratic society, no individual feels deprived. In an ideal merit-based society, all forms of corruption are avoided, and social mobility is maintained through a transparent, pure, and acceptable process. This is now considered a prevailing social and cultural hallmark of contemporary society. In the political sphere, meritocracy can serve as both a structure and a tool to help select people-friendly, promising, and responsible political leaders. However, in the case of Bangladesh, the all-consuming force of "politicocracy" has emerged as a black hole that devours all forms of socially positive initiatives. A necessary and practical solution for escaping this is the establishment of political meritocracy. This philosophical outlook is reflected in the essays of Masud Alam’s current book.
