শতবর্ষ আগে (১৯১৬) হরপ্রসাদ শাস্ত্রীর চর্যাপদ-প্রকাশ আমূল বদলে দিয়েছিল বাংলা ভাষা ও সাহিত্যের ইতিহাস।  পাশাপাশি এসেছিল মৈথিলি, উড়িয়া ও অসমীয়া সাহিত্যের ইতিহাস পুনর্বিবেচনার প্রসঙ্গ। তিন দশক পরে রাহুল সাংকৃত্যায়ন তিব্বতে পাওয়া ২০টি চর্যা প্রকাশ করেন (১৯৫৪) এলাহাবাদ থেকে।  পরের দশকে শশিভূষণ দাশগুপ্ত সন্ধান পান (১৯৬৩) আর এক গুচ্ছ চর্যার, যার ৯৮টি কলকাতা থেকে প্রকাশিত হয় নব চর্যাপদ (১৯৮৮) গ্রন্থে।  আশির দশকে জগন্নাথ উপাধ্যায় নেপাল থেকে সংগ্রহ করেন চর্যার তিনটি নতুন পুথি; যার থেকে ১৬৫টি গান বারাণসী থেকে দেবনাগরী অক্ষরে প্রকাশিত হয় চর্যাসংগ্রহ (২০১২) নামে।

নেপাল-তিব্বত অঞ্চলে তন্দ্রচর্চা ও বজ্রযানী-আরাধনায় দীর্ঘকাল ধরে যে মন্ত্রগান ব্যবহার হয় তা চর্যারই অনুবৃত্তি।  বর্তমান সংকলনে উপস্থাপিত ৩৩৫টি নতুন চর্যা সে-ধারারই অন্তর্গত।  এতে সরহ, শবর, ডোম্বী, দারক, গোদারি, কাহ্ন, ভুসুকুর মতো পরিচিত চর্যাকারদের পদ রয়েছে।  আবার শাস্ত্রীর সংকলনে পদ নেই এমন প্রাচীন চর্যাকার- জালন্ধরী নাগার্জ্জন, তিলোপা, নারোপা, লীলাবজ্র, অদ্বয়বজ্রের পদও স্থান পেয়েছে।  এই তিন শতাধিক পদ আনুমানিক ১০০ কবির রচনা, যার ৮০ জন চিহ্নিত।

বর্তমান সংকলনে নব-সংগৃহীত ৩৩৫টি পদের সঙ্গে রাহুলের ২০টি, শশিভূষণের ২১টি এবং জগন্নাথের ৩৭টি পদ পরিশিষ্টরূপে যুক্ত হয়েছে।  অষ্টম থেকে বিশ শতকের মধ্যে রচিত এই চার শতাধিক চর্যা বাংলা সাহিত্যের নতুন উপকরণ।  সংকলিত হওয়ার পূর্বে দীর্ঘকাল মুখে মুখে প্রচলিত থাকার সময়ে এর পাঠে পরিবর্তন সত্ত্বেও প্রাচীন ও মধ্যযুগের ভাষার রূপ হিসেবে এর গুরুত্ব অনন্য।  আবার বৌদ্ধধর্ম, বিশেষত তন্ত্রযান, বজ্রযান ও বৌদ্ধ দেবদেবীর বিকাশ অধ্যয়নের ক্ষেত্রেও পদগুলো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

A hundred years ago (in 1916), Haraprasad Shastri’s publication of the Charyapada fundamentally transformed the history of Bengali language and literature. Simultaneously, it sparked a re-evaluation of the literary histories of Maithili, Odia, and Assamese.

Three decades later, Rahul Sankrityayan published 20 Charyas discovered in Tibet (in 1954, from Allahabad). In the following decade, Shashibhushan Dasgupta found another collection of Charyas (in 1963), 98 of which were later published from Kolkata in the book Nava Charyapad (1988). During the 1980s, Jagannath Upadhyay collected three new manuscripts of Charyas from Nepal, from which 165 songs were published in Devanagari script from Varanasi in Charyasangraha (2012).

In the Nepal-Tibet region, the mystic songs used for centuries in Tantric practices and Vajrayāna rituals are continuations of these Charyas. The current compilation presents 335 newly discovered Charyas from this same tradition. These include verses by well-known Charya poets such as Saraha, Shabara, Dombi, Darka, Godari, Kanhapa, and Bhushuku, as well as ancient Charya poets like Jalandhari Nagarjuna, Tilopa, Naropa, Lilavajra, and Advayavajra, whose works were not included in Shastri’s earlier collection.

These 335 verses are composed by approximately 100 poets, of whom 80 have been identified.

In this collection, Rahul’s 20, Shashibhushan’s 21, and Jagannath’s 37 additional verses have been included as an appendix. Spanning a period from the 8th to the 20th century, these 400+ Charyas represent a new and valuable body of material for Bengali literature. Despite variations in their oral transmission before being compiled, they hold immense significance as representations of early and medieval Bengali language forms. Additionally, they are crucial for the study of Buddhism, particularly Tantra, Vajrayāna, and the evolution of Buddhist deities.
