The deep relationship between Subhash Chandra Bose and his wife Emilie is a little-known chapter of Netaji's life. They first met in Vienna in June 1934 and secretly married in the Austrian mountain town of Bad Gastein in December 1937. In February 1943, leaving behind his wife Emilie and their newborn daughter Anita in Europe, Netaji went to East Asia to lead the freedom struggle. They never met again in this life. Whenever Subhash and Emilie were temporarily separated, they maintained contact through regular correspondence.
Emilie was born into a middle-class family in Vienna in 1910 and passed away in 1996. She cherished the memories of her husband, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, throughout her life. Emilie had unwavering love and loyalty towards India. She single-handedly raised her daughter Anita with a strong sense of self-respect. Emilie, the companion of Netaji's struggle, preferred to stay away from the limelight. She was very affectionate towards Subhash's nephew, Sisir Kumar Bose. After Sisir's marriage in 1955, his wife Krishna Bose became closely attached to and loved by Emilie. Krishna had the opportunity to know Emilie personally for a long time.
