The short story is the pride of Bengali literature. The pride of Bengali short stories is Narendra Nath Mitra. Abu Syed Ayub had once marked one of his stories as "elevated to the level of the world's greatest short stories." Contemporary renowned storyteller Santosh Kumar Ghosh placed him alongside "Maupassant, O'Henry, Chekhov, and Rabindranath" in the highest regard. In fact, Narendra Nath Mitra's place in Bengali short story literature has long been well-established. From the beginning of his writing career, he has been a force in his own right. Over four decades, he wrote nearly five hundred short stories. His number of short story collections surpasses that of his novels. These stories, immortalized in their depiction of contemporary life, continue to resonate.
Sadly, Narendra Nath Mitra's story collections had been hard to come by for many years. However, researchers, filmmakers, and avid readers constantly sought his various stories. In response to this demand, fifty stories of various kinds by Narendra Nath Mitra have been published in different volumes of Golpomala. Three volumes have already been released, and this fourth volume presents fifty unforgettable stories, nearly lost but now revived. These are the very stories that established Narendra Nath Mitra's fame as a storyteller and are the basis of his considerable literary acclaim.
This compilation does not have a "preface" but instead includes a piece by Narendra Nath Mitra titled "On Myself: His Personal Views on Literary Practice." Like the first three volumes, the stories in this fourth volume are arranged in the chronological order of their creation. Each story includes a note on its date of writing and details about where the story was first published in journals or magazines. Editor Abhijit Mitra has also provided some relevant information about the included stories in his introduction.
