Despite many adversities in Sita's life, her dream of building a home with Anjan tied her to her birthplace, the village of Bidhupur. That bond was severed when Anjan decided to marry someone else. Heartbroken, Sita left her village and moved to Kolkata, where she helplessly became a domestic helper in a household.
A similar fate befell Shubhankari, a whimsical woman from the Sundarbans. Her husband brought home a second wife, driving her out of her house, family, and the familiar yellow-soaked village. She too ended up in a "babu's" house, working as a servant.
The novel Ghaat intertwines the stories of Sita, Shubhankari, and many other women who faced shattered dreams. Yet, it also explores how, amidst despair, new dreams and fresh realities emerge.
