"Narayana Gangopadhyay Born: 1325 Bengali calendar, in Baliadangi, Dinajpur, Bangladesh. Ancestral home: Barisal. His childhood was spent in Dinajpur, by the banks of the Atrai River. His college life was in Faridpur. He secured the first position with first-class honors in the MA examination in Bengali literature. Narayan Gangopadhyay's real name was Taraknath, but he began his literary career under the name Narayan Gangopadhyay, by which he became well-known.

He initially taught at City College in Kolkata and later at the University of Calcutta. He earned a D.Litt. degree for his research on short stories. At first, he wrote poetry. He even won a prize for writing poetry for children in the 'Mashpoyla' magazine. His first story was 'Nishither Maya'. The first novel he wrote was 'Timir Tirtha'. The first published novel was 'Upanibesh'. He won his first award in the 'Kathashilpi' story competition.

He wrote numerous short stories, novels, and several plays. At one time, he also wrote screenplays for films. He was renowned as a critic and journalist. The 'Basumati' magazine awarded him the first prize for news-literature. The University of Calcutta posthumously awarded him the Sarojini Basu Gold Medal. Towards the end of his life, he became extremely popular for writing humorous pieces under the pseudonym 'Sunanda' in the 'Desh' magazine. He passed away on the 22nd day of Kartik, 1377 Bengali calendar."
