In this novel, the expatriate Bengali woman, Ranjana, builds a grand palace in Kolkata. Her husband, Bijon, also wanted them to have a house in this city. Ranjana plans to bring their growing teenage daughter, Tupur, from abroad to raise her in this house. Bijon will return home after finishing his job abroad. However, amidst the busy lives of her parents, Tupur has become completely wayward. She has gotten used to various addictions, multiple boyfriends, and reckless spending.

Tupur suddenly arrives in Kolkata. Ranjana, recovering from her disillusionment, gets her daughter treated for mental health issues. Yet, there remains intense conflict and the pain of separation between mother and daughter. It seems as if all the roots have been severed. Ultimately, Tupur's foreign boyfriend, Bob, saves her with his love.

Parallelly, the author weaves the story of Nandini, a middle-class working mother, and her school-going teenage daughter, Jhilim. Jhilim's father stays separately in some tantric ashram. In her mother's absence throughout the day, Jhilim leads a lonely and monotonous life of school and studies, and she falls in love with Anil, a boy from the neighborhood slum. One day, Jhilim runs away with Anil.

In search of her daughter, the confused Nandini goes to the police. Ranjana is also there because of Tupur. The two mothers meet and deeply connect with each other, understanding each other's pain. Confused Tupur and disillusioned Jhilim eventually return to their mothers. But through which path?

This extraordinary introspective novel by Samaresh Majumdar tells that story. The novel beautifully explores the themes of parental relationships, societal expectations, and the quest for understanding and redemption.
