Bengali culture is exceptional in its diversity and distinctiveness. An inseparable part of this culture is puja, which complements religion, culture, and tradition. Hence, beyond the familiar and widely known public pujas associated with the saying “baro mase tero parbon” (thirteen festivals in twelve months), Bengal has long been home to many unique pujas held at different times and in different places—some of them centuries old.

The deities worshipped in these pujas range from mythological to folk gods and goddesses. In some places, idols are made and worshipped only on specific auspicious dates. In other cases, although a puja traditionally has a fixed date, it is observed on a different date in certain locations. Elsewhere, familiar pujas take on distinctly unusual forms. Among the deities in this rich tradition are Goddess Rajarajeshwari, Vindhyabasini, Bhuvaneshwari, Ganga, Brahma, Shamichandi, Ganesh Janani, Kartik Thakur, Kali, and many others.

Just as their modes of worship and rituals are distinctive, so too are the fascinating stories associated with them. This book aims to introduce a wider readership to such ancient yet little-known—and in some cases locally confined—exceptional pujas of Bengal.
