Those were days of unbridled excitement. Before noon even slipped into afternoon, Bengalis would head straight for the fields. Drawn by football, they pushed aside every other attraction in life and filled every corner of the gallery. Cricket, too—though not in the way it is today—was loved by Bengalis with a pure, quiet passion. In those days, it had not yet been tainted by the flashy spectacle of pan-parag glamour.
Those who had no chance of witnessing the action in person made do as best they could—listening to radio commentary on All India Radio or keeping their eyes fixed on the sports pages of the daily newspapers. But did that ever truly quench the thirst? A sense of dissatisfaction always lingered. Many gaps remained. The sports-mad Bengali heart yearned to know so much more.
