উত্তরপূর্ব ভারতের বরাক উপত্যকার বুকে নিবিড় সবুজে ঘেরা এই ছোট্ট শহর আজ যেন হঠাৎ কোনও প্রাচীন আগ্নেয়গিরির মত জ্বলে উঠেছে।
ভোরবেলা থেকে গোটা শহরে ত্রাহী ত্রাহী রব। কাতারে কাতারে লোক ছুটে চলেছে শিলচর রেলস্টেশনের দিকে। কেউ খালি পায়ে, কেউ লাঠি হাতে, কেউ ছোটো শিশুদের কাঁধে বসিয়ে। সরু সরু কাঁচা রাস্তায় গরুর গাড়ি আর পায়ে হাঁটা মানুষের ভিড়ে জমে উঠেছে ধুলো, কিন্তু সেই ধুলো ঢাকা মুখেও ফুটে উঠছে প্রতিজ্ঞার দীপ্তি। মাথায় গামছা বাঁধা কৃষক, শাড়ির আঁচল সামলে ছুটে আসা গৃহবধূ, কাঁচা স্কুলের ইউনিফর্ম গায়ে সদ্য বড় হওয়া ছেলেমেয়ে, সবার চোখেই একটা অনড় জেদ।
আজ ট্রেন অচল করতেই হবে। নাহলে কিছুতেই রাজ্যসরকারকে টলানো যাবে না।
শহরের গা ঘেঁষে চলা বরাক নদীও তার ঢেউয়ে যেন আজ কোনও অজানা সঙ্গীত বয়ে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে। কাকডাকা ভোরে কুয়াশার চাদর ভেদ করে যেন গোপনে শুনে নিচ্ছে মানুষের রক্তগরম কথাবার্তা। বাতাসে কাঁচা বাঁশ আর কাঁঠালের গন্ধ মিশে আছে ধ্বনির সঙ্গে। যেন প্রকৃতিও জানে, আজকের সকালটা আর পাঁচটা সকালের মতো নয়।
তারপর?
বঙ্গভঙ্গ ও স্বদেশী আন্দোলন, আসামের ভাষা বিপ্লবের জ্বলন্ত প্রেক্ষিতে মহাবিপ্লবী উল্লাসকর দত্তের অবিশ্বাস্য জীবন উপাখ্যান এবং বাংলার পরিকল্পিত হত্যা ষড়যন্ত্রের মর্মন্তুদ আঁকা হয়েছে এই বিস্তৃত পটভূমির উপন্যাসে। রয়েছেন বহু বিস্মৃত দেশপ্রেমিক। আবেগে ভাসা উপাখ্যান।

May 19, 1961. Silchar, Assam.
This small town, nestled amid the dense greenery of the Barak Valley in Northeast India, seems today to have suddenly erupted like an ancient volcano.

From early morning, cries of alarm echo throughout the city. People stream in long lines toward Silchar railway station—some barefoot, some gripping sticks, some carrying small children on their shoulders. On the narrow dirt roads, bullock carts and crowds of pedestrians raise clouds of dust; yet even behind dust-covered faces shines the glow of firm resolve. Farmers with towels tied around their heads, housewives rushing while holding their sari pallus in place, newly grown boys and girls in worn school uniforms—all share the same unyielding determination in their eyes.

Today, the trains must be stopped. Otherwise, there is no way to shake the state government.

Even the Barak River flowing along the edge of the town seems to carry an unknown melody in its waves today. At the crack of dawn, piercing through the veil of mist, it appears to secretly listen to the blood-heated conversations of the people. The air is filled with sound mixed with the raw scents of bamboo and jackfruit, as if nature itself knows that this morning is unlike any other.

Set against the blazing backdrop of the Partition of Bengal, the Swadeshi Movement, and the Assam Language Movement, this novel paints a heartrending portrait of the unbelievable life of the great revolutionary Ullaskar Dutta, along with the grim reality of a planned conspiracy to annihilate Bengal. Many forgotten patriots also appear in its pages. It is an emotionally charged saga, carried forward by passion and sacrifice.
