আত্মজিজ্ঞাসা ব্যতিরেকে শিল্প অনর্থক। শিল্পীর এই অনুসন্ধান তাঁর পথচলার প্রথম দিন থেকেই। কিন্তু, কী তাঁর জিজ্ঞাসা? নিজের কাছে? শিল্পপৃথিবীর কাছে? দক্ষতা ও জ্ঞান অর্জনের পর শিল্পীকেই বেছে নিতে হয় নিজের পথ, যা সকলের থেকে পৃথক ও নতুন। নতুন, কিন্তু তার পূর্বভিত্তি থাকাটাও জরুরি। তাই, প্রশ্ন অনেক। উত্তর খুঁজে পান একমাত্র তিনি, যিনি সাধক, শিল্পের।  মনের প্রশ্ন খাতায় লিপিবদ্ধ হয়েছিল উত্তর অনুসন্ধানের আশায়। শিল্প সম্পর্কে ধারণা নিজের কাছে পরিষ্কার করা ছাড়া আর কোনো দায় ছিল না এইসব লেখার। কিন্তু ভূমিষ্ঠের নিয়তিই প্রকাশ। বিভিন্ন পত্রপত্রিকায় নিরন্তর প্রকাশিত হয়েছে এইসব লেখা। এত দিনে, একত্রিত হল, মাঝে বয়ে গেছে ষাটের অতিরিক্ত কিছু বছর।

Without any self-enquiry, art seems void. This enquiry or search on the part of the artist commences from the very first day of his journey.  But what does he want to know from his own self? From the world of art? After acquiring skill and knowledge, the artist has to select his own course which is different and new from others. In spite of being new, it should have a previous foundation. Thus it gives rise to many a question. Only he finds the answer who follows the artistic discipline. The question which are raised in mind were noted with the hope to find the answer. He did not have any other intention while writing these articles but to clarify his own ideas about art. But one who is born, is destined to be published.  Those writings have been regularly published in various magazines.  Now, they have come in print as an omnibus: meanwhile more than sixty years glided by.
