এগিয়ে এসে সম্মুখে দাঁড়াল। কিছুক্ষণ মেহরিমার দিকে চেয়ে থেকে ছোট্ট করে বলল “চল।” মেহরিমা ডানে মাথা নাড়াল। অতঃপর দুজন হাঁটতে বেরিয়ে পড়ল। গন্তব্যস্থল অজানা।
দুজনে পাশাপাশি হাঁটছে। রাতের মৃদুমন্দ গতিতে বয়ে চলা হাওয়া দুজন কপোত কপোতীর কায়া, চিত্ত জুড়ে ঢেউ খেলে যাচ্ছে। মেহরিমা, হৃদিত দুজনের শরীরেই শুভ্র রঙা কাপড় জড়ানো। মধ্যরাত হওয়ার দরুন মেহরিমা শরীরে আর বোরকা জড়ায়নি। ওড়নাটার একাংশ মাথায় তুলে দেওয়া। অপর অংশ প্রভঞ্জনের সহিত ওড়ার প্রতিযোগিতায় নেমেছে। রাতের পরিবেশে নৃত্য করছে। ল্যাম্পপোস্টের আবছা নিয়ন আলোয় মেহরিমার নাকফুলসহ তার পাশের কালো তিলটা জ্বলজ্বল করছে। হৃদিত একমনে সেদিকে চেয়ে আছে। পকেট থেকে হাত সরিয়ে নাকফুলে ছুঁয়ে দিলো। মেহরিমার শীর্ণ দেহখানা ঈষৎ কেঁপে উঠল।
“সবসময় যেন এই নাকফুলটা তোর নাকে থাকে, অ্যানাবেলা। কখনো খুলবি না।”

He stepped forward and stood in front of her. After staring at Mehrima for a moment, he said softly, “Come.”
Mehrima shook her head to the right. Then, the two of them started walking. Their destination—unknown.

They walked side by side. The night breeze, flowing gently, rippled through their bodies and hearts like waves touching two lovebirds. Both Mehrima and Hridit were wrapped in garments of pure white. Since it was midnight, Mehrima had not draped a burqa over herself. A portion of her scarf was pulled over her head, while the rest had joined the gusts of wind in a playful contest, dancing in the night air.

In the dim neon glow of the lamppost, Mehrima’s nose-ring glittered along with the tiny black mole beside it. Hridit gazed at it, completely entranced. He slid his hand from his pocket and gently touched the nose-ring. Mehrima’s frail body trembled slightly.

“May this nose-ring always remain on your nose, Anabella. Never take it off.”
