এতকাল বাস করছি, এই টালা-বেলগাছিয়া-পাইকপাড়ায়, কই, তেমন কিছু লিখিনি তো চাদ্দিকের মানুষ নিয়ে, যারা ছিল, যারা আছে, তাদের নিয়ে। নানারকম মানুষের নানারকম জগৎ নিয়ে। এখন কি আর সম্ভব? প্রায় সত্তর বছর কেটে গেল হেথায়, শিকড় চারিয়ে গেছে কংক্রিটের দালানে যখন, আর কি হবে লেখা?
বিহঙ্গেরা মৃত্যুর আগে পশ্চিমে উড়ে যায়। উড়ে যায় উড়ে যায় সূর্যাস্তের দিকে। সারাজীবন আমরা পুব থেকে পশ্চিমে হাঁটি। পশ্চিমে হেঁটে চলেছি।
সকালবেলায় মানুষ যেমন হাঁটে, তা অনুসরণ করতে চেয়েছি। খুঁজতে চেয়েছি এই জীবনের প্রাতঃকাল। প্রাতঃকালের এই জীবন। এই জনপদের প্রাতঃকাল। প্রাতঃকালের এই জনপদ। গল্প নয়। নভেল নয়। আবার আত্মকথাও নয়। এ হল সৃষ্টিছাড়া এক দিনপঞ্জি, যার অনেকটা চোখে দেখার সত্য, অনেকটা কল্পনার সত্য।

I have lived so long here, in Tala–Belgachhia–Paikpara, and yet, strangely enough, I have hardly written about the people around me—those who once were, those who still are. About their worlds, so varied, so different. Is it even possible now? Nearly seventy years have passed here; roots have sunk deep into these concrete buildings—what more is left to write?

Birds, before they die, fly westward. They keep flying, flying toward the sunset. All our lives, we too walk from east to west. We are still walking westward.

I tried to follow the way people walk in the mornings. I tried to seek out the dawn of this life. The dawn of this neighborhood. The dawn of this place. It is not a story. It is not a novel. Nor is it an autobiography. It is a formless diary, much of it made of the truth the eyes have seen, and much of it of the truth born of imagination.
