আজ এক মহাবিপর্যয়ের মুখে দাঁড়িয়ে পৃথিবী। প্রাণের আগমনের পর এই গ্রহ অন্তত পাঁচ-পাঁচটি মাস এক্সটিঙ্কশন বা গণবিলুপ্তির সাক্ষী থেকেছে। যার একেকটিতে অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে লুপ্ত হয়ে গেছে সমগ্র পৃথিবীর তিন চতুর্থাংশের বেশি জীব। তবে সেগুলো ঘটেছিল প্রাকৃতিক কারণে। এবার আমরা ষষ্ঠ গণবিলুপ্তির মাঝামাঝি পৌঁছে গেছি। যার নাম হলোসিন এক্সটিঙ্কশন। এবং এই বিপর্যয়ের কারণ মানুষ নিজে। যার কাছে সভ্যতার অর্থ হল প্রকৃতিকে নেহাতই সম্পদ সৃষ্টির মাধ্যম বা পণ্য হিসেবে ইচ্ছেমত ব্যবহার করা, নিয়ন্ত্রণ করা। আর তা করতে করতে সেই মানুষই এবার টের পেয়েছে ধ্বংসের আর বেশি দেরি নেই। গত দুশো বছরে পৃথিবীতে মানুষের জনসংখ্যা বেড়েছে অন্তত সাত গুণ। আর অবশিষ্ট জীবজগতের ধ্বংস ত্বরান্বিত হয়েছে প্রায় একশো থেকে এক হাজার গুণ। পরিবেশ দূষণ, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের মত ভয়াল অভিশাপে অদূর ভবিষ্যতেই শেষ হতে চলেছে পৃথিবীর বুকে প্রাণের চিহ্ন। এই পর্যায়ে এসে মানুষ পরিবেশকে বাঁচাতে কিছুটা চেষ্টা করছে বটে, কিন্তু পরিস্থিতি এমনই যে কোনো চেষ্টাই যেন আর যথেষ্ট মনে হচ্ছে না। অথচ কয়েক হাজার বছর আগে এই ভারত ভূমিখণ্ডেই এমন এক সভ্যতা গড়ে উঠেছিল, যেখানকার মানুষ প্রকৃতির সমস্ত সন্তানের সঙ্গে একাত্ম হয়ে বসবাস করে এসেছে। “মাতা ভূমি পুত্রোহম পৃথিব্যা” এই জীবনদর্শনকে আশ্রয় করে এই মাটিকে তারা রক্ষা করেছে, সমৃদ্ধ করেছে। কিন্তু কালক্রমে শতকের পর শতক ধরে অসংখ্য বিদেশি আক্রমণ এবং পরবর্তীতে ঔপনিবেশিক শাসন-শিক্ষা-সংস্কৃতির প্রভাবে সেই জীবনশৈলীর অনেকটাই আজ বিস্মৃত। আবার সময় এসেছে তাকে নতুন করে বাঁচিয়ে তোলার। আজকের যুগে দাঁড়িয়েও যা পারে এই বিপর্যয়ের গতি রুখে দিতে। মানুষ কি পারবে?

Today, the Earth stands on the brink of a great catastrophe. Since the arrival of life, this planet has witnessed at least five mass extinctions—each wiping out more than three-fourths of all living beings in a relatively short time. But those were caused by natural events.

This time, however, we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction—known as the Holocene Extinction—and its cause is none other than humans themselves. To humanity, “civilization” has come to mean exploiting nature solely as a source of resources or commodities, controlling it at will. And in doing so, humans have now realized that destruction is not far away.

In the last two hundred years, the human population has increased nearly sevenfold, while the destruction of the rest of the living world has accelerated by roughly 100 to 1,000 times. Environmental pollution and the curse of climate change are pushing the Earth toward a future where signs of life may soon vanish entirely.

At this stage, humans are indeed making some efforts to save the environment, but the situation has become so dire that no attempt seems enough. Yet, thousands of years ago, right here on the Indian subcontinent, there once flourished a civilization where people lived in complete harmony with all children of nature. Guided by the life philosophy of “Mata Bhumi Putroham Prithivya” (“The Earth is my mother, and I am her son”), they protected and enriched the land.

Over centuries, however, countless foreign invasions and later colonial rule, education, and culture have erased much of that way of life from memory. Now the time has come to revive it anew—for it may still hold the power to halt this disaster, even in our modern age.

But will humanity succeed?
