Our first war of independence did not take place in 1857.

In fact, tribal uprisings against the British began at least 75 years before the Revolution of 1857. These battles were fought with traditional bows, arrows, and spears, and were recorded much earlier than the political movements of the late nineteenth century.

Today, as we complete 75 years of independence, it is important to acknowledge that alongside the main freedom movement described in history books, a parallel struggle for independence had already taken place in our remote villages and forests.

India’s Great Tribal Warriors is a humble attempt to honour the unsung heroes of this significant movement, whose contributions have largely gone unrecognized. The book begins with Tilka Manjhi, who initiated guerrilla warfare to challenge the British. It also includes Jaipal Singh Munda, one of the key figures who shaped the direction of the movement and was among the most influential speakers in the Constituent Assembly. These brave warriors came from all parts of India—including the Northeast and the South—and represented every tribal community in the country.

This book is a rare collection that traces our journey of self-discovery, from civilization to nationhood.
