The essence of theatre lies in an encounter. The person who works toward self-expression is establishing a connection with themselves. That is to say, it is an intense conflict—sincere, paradoxical—moving toward a precise discipline. And this conflict is not just with their thoughts, but one that involves their instincts and unconscious self, bringing even their most articulate state into a confrontation with their entire being.

Theatre is also an encounter among creative individuals. As a director or producer, I come face to face with the actor, and the actor’s self-expression gives me a sense of my own.
