এক তান্ত্রিক মতে, মদ্য - মাস - মৎস - মুদ্রা - মৈথুন, এই পাঁচ ‘ম’ -কার হল সাধনার প্রাণস্বরূপ। পাঁচটি উপাদানের নামাদিতে ‘ম’, তাই এমন আখ্যা।

রাজনীতিও ঠিক তেমনই। রাজনীতি সমাজের চালিকাশক্তি, আবার তার বিরুদ্ধে দাঙ্গা, খুনোখুনি, ধান্দাবাজি, স্বার্থপরতা, ক্ষমতালিপ্সার অভিযোগও বিস্তর।

তা নন্দিতই হোক বা নিন্দিত, আমাদের মতে আশি - নব্বইয়ের দশকে ভারতীয় রাজনীতির উপাদান নতুন এক পঞ্চমকার— মন্দির, মসজিদ, মণ্ডল, মসনদ ও মৃত্যু।

এই পাঁচ ‘ম’ সূচক শব্দ ঘিরেই আবর্তিত হয়েছে রাজনীতির কুশীলবদের ভাগ্য। সে দলে শায়র বাজপেয়ী  কিংবা রথরোহী আদবানী যেমন আছেন তেমনি  “ভুলোমনা” চন্দ্রশেখরও আছেন। স্মৃতিধর-খ্যাত প্রণব আছেন, ইয়ং ইন্ডিয়া-র ভগীরথ রাজীব আছেন, গ্রান্ড ওল্ড ম্যান পিভি আছেন, আছেন মিস্টার ক্লিনার ভিপি সিং। জ্যোতি বসু, বুদ্ধদেব, সোনিয়া, মমতারাও আসবেন উল্লেখযোগ্য ভূমিকায়। দুই সিং পালোয়ান, মুলায়ম - কল্যাণের রাজনৈতিক কুস্তির কথা যেমন হবে, তেমনি হবে যাদব কূলপতি লালুপ্রসাদ অথবা অকালে ঝড়ে যাওয়া ফুল, ফুলন দেবী-র কথাও।

According to a certain Tantric belief, wine (madya), meat (mamsa), fish (matsya), grain (mudra), and sexual union (maithuna)—these five elements beginning with the letter 'M' (in Sanskrit, the five ma-karas) are the lifeblood of spiritual practice. Since the names of these five elements begin with ‘M’, they are collectively referred to in this way.

Politics is quite similar. It is the driving force of society, yet it is also heavily criticized—for riots, violence, manipulation, selfishness, and a hunger for power.

Whether celebrated or condemned, in our view, Indian politics during the 1980s and 1990s revolved around a new set of five ‘M’s—Mandir (temple), Masjid (mosque), Mandal (commission), Masnad (throne/power), and Mrityu (death).

The fate of the key players in politics revolved around these five ‘M’ markers. Among them were the poet-politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the chariot-riding Advani, as well as the forgetful Chandra Shekhar. The sharp-witted and renowned Pranab Mukherjee, Rajiv Gandhi—the Bhagirath of Young India, the grand old man P. V. Narasimha Rao, and Mr. Clean, V. P. Singh, also played central roles. Jyoti Basu, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Sonia Gandhi, and Mamata Banerjee will also feature in important capacities. There will be tales of the two wrestling Singhs—Mulayam and Kalyan—and their political tussles, as well as stories of Yadav patriarch Lalu Prasad, and Phoolan Devi—the flower who was blown away in an untimely storm.
